Consultant General Pediatrician: Fredericton,
New Brunswick (Full-time salaried)
 
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Horizon Health Network seeks an additional consulting general pediatrician to join the Department of Pediatrics at the Dr Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital in Fredericton, New Brunswick. A long term locum may be considered. The candidate will join an existing congenial and academic-minded group of 4 general pediatricians who do on-call, 2 general pediatricians who are off call, and 3 neonatologists.  This is an opportunity to develop a referral office-based practice with the full scope of pediatrics represented (no primary care).   Shared hospital responsibility will include consultation to ER and admission and care for pediatric inpatients and unattached newborns.   Call averages to 1:5 nights and weekends.
 
The newly renovated inpatient pediatric unit has 8+ dedicated pediatric beds, as well as inpatient mental health beds and improved ambulatory care space.  The pediatricians provide care for all chronic and complex childhood illness, including satellite pediatric oncology treatment, diabetes clinics, and are supported by specialist travelling clinics from IWK Children’s Hospital.  The neonatologists staff our modified level 3 NICU.  The pediatricians participate in clinical teaching of students and residents and are eligible for academic affiliation with Dalhousie and Memorial universities.

HOSPITAL/FACILITY:
The Chalmers Hospital is a regional referral hospital with 314 beds and a full scope of medical specialties represented excluding cardiac and neurosurgery.  It serves as a referral centre for a catchment population of 166,000 in western and central New Brunswick.

HOURS OF WORK
  • Monday-Friday 37.5 hours per week during 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.
  • On-call coverage is 24 hours when on call, full weekend is Fri am- Mon am
 JOB DUTIES:
  • Responsible for own in-patient care; Including but not limited to admission, history and physical examination, daily rounds, discharge summary, appropriate referrals and follow up after discharge
  • Performs clinical duties including but not restricted to seeing and assessing scheduled and unscheduled patients for routine and illness care, prescribing treatment, consults, referral to other healthcare professionals as required, making home/hospital visits as necessary and appropriate follow-up to patients across the lifespan.
  • Provide family-centered primary care by taking into account risk factors (environmental, social, psychological and medical) in a manner which can be understood by the client, and when applicable, their families.
  • Participate in the use of departmental and corporate evidence-based rules of practice to ensure that expected standards of care are achieved.
  • Participate in medical practice that is compatible with the Health Authority’s mission, values and strategic directions.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of treatment and education for individuals, families and the community.
  • Participate in medical staff meetings/conferences.
  • Other duties that may arise by circumstance and may be assigned by the Medical Director and/or the Department Head of Pediatrics
Note:  These responsibilities are the basic and prime duties associated with this position; other related and allied duties may be assigned from time to time as may be necessary to the operation of Horizon Health Network.
 
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Maintain FRCPC certification.
  • Comply with the policies and procedures of the Department of Pediatrics..
  • Comply with the provisions of the Hospital Act, the Regional Health Authorities Act, the Medical Services Payment Act, and their regulations.
  • Comply with the Health Authority bylaws, rules and regulations, and policies and procedures.
Follow the Code of Ethics of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick.
 
REMUNERATION:
  • Salaried coverage based on the provincial Medical Pay Plan.
INCENTIVES:

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, FRCPC
  • Must hold or is eligible for a valid license to practice medicine in the Province of New Brunswick
  • Must be a member in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick.
  • Must have current malpractice insurance from the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) appropriate to the category of practice.
  • Must be certified in CPR and PALS.
  • Must be an energetic and affable individual with recent experience in pediatrics and comfort in managing all common pediatric emergencies
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and team-building skills.
  • Good attendance and work record.
  • Physically able to perform assigned duties.
