Position description:

Horizon Health Network, Saint John Area (Region 2), is actively seeking a permanent full-time Academic Emergency Medicine Physician, with a leadership role as Assistant Point of Care Ultrasound (PoCUS) Program Director. Successful candidates will be expected to work clinically in the Department of Emergency Medicine, Saint John Area and will also secure an appointment with Dalhousie University, participating in research, educational, and CPD programs, with opportunities to teach at Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick.

HOURS OF WORK:

JOB DUTIES:

The following outlines the basic responsibilities. Additional duties may be assigned from time to time as may be necessary to the operation of Horizon Health Network:

·        Participate in clinical care and on-call responsibilities as defined by your department.

·        Participate in deliverables as outlined in the Emergency Medicine Academic Funding Plan.

·        Participate in medical practice that is compatible with the Health Authority’s mission, values and strategic directions.

·        Provide leadership to the Department as the Emergency Medicine Saint John (EMSJ) Assistant Point of Care Ultrasound (PoCUS) Program Director. (see below).


ASSISTANT POCUS PROGRAM DIRECTOR ROLE:


The Emergency Medicine Saint John (EMSJ) Assistant PoCUS Program Director will also hold the title of PoCUS Fellowship Director or Assistant Fellowship Director depending on level of candidate experience. The Assistant PoCUS Director works closely with the PoCUS Program Director in all matters related to our PoCUS Fellowship, including recruitment, program deliverables, assessment, and curriculum development. In addition, the Assistant PoCUS Program Director provides the opportunity to sit on various ultrasound committees and contribute to PoCUS education at the medical school level and beyond. Lastly, the Assistant Director contributes significantly to our CanPoCUS course program (https://canpocus.com/). CanPoCUS (ECCU) was established over 20 years ago and has been delivering highly acclaimed PoCUS courses in Atlantic Canada (and worldwide) for many years. The Assistant PoCUS Program Director will be responsible for expanding our course program, assisting with course curricula/content and course delivery.

 

All our sites have recently updated ultrasound machines and are all connected to a central archiving system (QPath). Our PoCUS simulation room includes access to dedicated teaching machines, a brand new Vimedix simulator and multiple phantoms.

 

The EMSJ PoCUS program is highly respected within Canada and further afield. We have close links with our Research program and PoCUS is one of our core research pillars. This position will provide the holder with opportunities to be supported in PoCUS research, get involved in national/international PoCUS academic forums and teach on national/international PoCUS courses. There are also opportunities to get involved with the Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick longitudinal PoCUS program.


REMUNERATION:

 

A nationally competitive Academic Funding Plan compensates Emergency Medicine physicians for clinical excellence, medical education, research and administration. The successful applicant will be compensated at an hourly rate for their clinical shifts and general contribution to the department and are eligible to receive additional funding for specific academic and administrative projects.

INCENTIVES: 

§ Candidates may be eligible for a Provincial Recruitment Incentive with a Return of Service Agreement.

§ Moving Expense Allowance with a Return of Service Agreement.

QUALIFICATIONS (General):

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ASSISTANT POCUS PROGRAM DIRECTOR ROLE:

 

The successful candidate will have completed a PoCUS Fellowship or an equivalent level of PoCUS expertise. Demonstration of an advanced level PoCUS portfolio, and related academic activity is required. They must be highly credible and have excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
