Emergency Medicine Physicians


The Acadian Peninsula Department of Emergency and Family Medicine, part of the Zone 6 (Acadie-Bathurst) of the Vitalité Health Network seeks to recruit Emergency Medicine physicians full-time. The work can be distributed between the Enfant-Jésus RHSJ† Hospital of Caraquet and the Tracadie-Sheila Hospital. Both hospitals are part of the Vitalité Heath Network, and we have a dynamic medical team, engaged staff, and dedicated volunteers and offer a wide variety of primary and secondary services. The specialized support to both the Caraquet and Tracadie-Sheila Hospitals is given by the Chaleur Regional Hospital in Bathurst, about 80 km away. The Chaleur Regional Hospital has approximately 215 beds, and offers a variety of primary and regional specialized secondary services, to include the majority of surgical services. The candidate is expected to participate in the teaching of students and residents in medicine.


The Enfant-Jésus RHSJ† Hospital in Caraquet is a 12-bed acute care facility. The hospital offers: emergency care 24/7, general medicine services; palliative care; diagnostic and therapeutic services; oncology services; ambulatory care; and some specialized services. The Emergency Department receives approximately 26 000 visits annually, which is about 70 visits per day.

The Tracadie-Sheila Hospital provides acute inpatient services in a 69-bed facility, as well as basic services in medicine, concentrated care, palliative care, and dialysis, not to mention diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ambulatory care and some specialized services. The Emergency Department receives approximately 23 000 visits annually, which is about 63 visits per day.

Overview of the Regional Health Authority – Vitalité Health Network is one of the two Regional Health Authorities in New Brunswick. The Network is the only Francophone managed organization of its kind in the country and provides services in nearly 70 sites and points of service throughout four health zones, covering all of the northern region and part of the southeastern region of the province. Services and care are provided in the official languages chosen by the patient and are available at home, in the community, or in a facility, according to needs. The range of services includes disease prevention and health promotion, treatment of illness, rehabilitation, home care, and palliative care. Additional services provided by hospital facilities include public health, community mental health, addiction, community health centres, the Extra-Mural Program, and veterans' centres. This position involves clinical work in the provision of general medical care of patients. The work involves responsibility for performing medical care in the diagnosis and treatment of illness and may require close cooperation with various health care professionals. Work is performed with opportunity for independent judgment and action, and is reviewed by the physician’s Clinical Department Head / Chief of Service / Program Director in which the physician works. Review of the work may also be supervised by the Local and Regional Chiefs of Staff and the zone’s Medical Director of the Regional Health Authority (RHA). The physician works in accordance of the RHA Bylaws.

• Following a work schedule determined by the Chief of the Emergency department
• On-call coverage according to a percentage of day-evening-night-weekend calculated depending on preferences, and with regards to the number of shifts per week.
• Knowledge of French and English, written and spoken, is required.

Standard remuneration is sessional hourly rate, which is a direct compensation between the physician and Medicare of New Brunswick.  No benefits and source deductions are provided. 

• The candidate must have his certification CFPC, as well as the ACLS and ATLS up to date. Training in Emergency Ultrasound is an asset
• The candidate must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick. 
• Knowledge of French and English, spoken and written, is necessary.

The Acadian Peninsula is surrounded by water with, on one side, the Chaleur Bay (part of the Most Beautiful Bays of the World Club) and, on the other, the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.
